The National Muslim Council of Tanzania (BAKWATA) is a well-established faith-based Islamic organization registered since 1968, recognized both in Tanzania and internationally. In promoting unity, peace, and harmony, BAKWATA collaborates with various faith groups and local, national government organizations to achieve the following goals:
Using religious teachings to promote sustainable environmental management and the sustainable use of natural resources.
Mainstreaming environmental education into the curriculum to raise awareness on environmental issues among students.
Using extracurricular activities to promote environmental protection and advocate for alternative technologies.
To be an exemplary and unifying Islamic Organization that unites all Muslim in Tanzania spiritually and contributes to the betterment of the Muslim Community and Society at large.
To promote proper understanding of Islam that is based on the Holly Qur’an, Sunnah and other new developing Laws in Islam to all Tanzanians. It is our hope that Insh’ allah, BAKWATA will empower Muslims to understand well the World and life after death.
Sincerity (Ikhlas) – In responding to poverty and suffering, our efforts are driven by sincerity to God and the need to fulfill our obligations to humanity.
Excellence (Ihsan) – Our actions in tackling poverty are marked by excellence in our operations and the conduct through which we help the deserving people we serve.
Compassion (Rahma) – We believe the protection and well-being of every life is of paramount importance and we shall join with other humanitarian actors to act as one in responding to suffering brought on by disasters, poverty and injustice.
Social Justice (Adl) – Our work is founded on enabling people and institutions to fulfill the rights of the poor and vulnerable. We work to empower the dispossessed towards realizing their God-given human potential and develop their capabilities and resources.
Custodianship (Amana) – We uphold our duty of custodianship over Earth and its resources, and the trust people place in us as a humanitarian and development practitioner to be transparent and accountable.

Its teachings encompass spirituality, morality, social justice, and the responsibilities of individuals and communities.
